Let me start by saying that Madam Melman has been simply amazing in teaching my son Teo phonics, and how to read. I have also learned so much from her and now I understand how to help my son and I consider that very important as a parent.

Madam Melman has been my son’s tutor for the past 2 years at least. Teo is 9 years old and he is in the French Immersion system, at present in 4th grade. I am a physician, We live on Vancouver Island and  the lessons have been via Zoom.

Miss Melman is a very knowledgeable  and so much fun to learn with. She has been continuously encouraging Teo while making sure he takes no shortcuts and understands the rules of reading and writing in English!

Among so many things we enjoy during her classes , my son loves the drawing and the short and super useful songs and cartoons. And I am saying we because I am so excited and I am actively participating in their lesson!

I must say that Teo has been greatly improving his  reading and writing as well he has now forever tools for word decoding and writing in English. He has been showing more interest in reading, has been more focused and less frustrated.

Jo Ann has been  a super patient , adapting to and understanding Teo’ s learning ways and needs and she makes her classes dynamic and fun!

I am so grateful that Madam Jo Ann Melman has been part of Teo’s learning journey and there are not enough words to express our appreciation!

Sincerely,

Cornelia Popa

To Whom it may concern,

I have known Jo-Ann Melman for five years. We met through Scouts as my son attended Scouts for many years, and he achieved his Chief Scouts award and became a Venturer to a large degree because of the help, encouragement, support, and mentorship he received from Jo-Ann. It was a great experience for him.

As we came to know Jo-Ann better through Scouts, we learned that she is a teacher and that she does tutoring for school children in all subjects, and particularly she specializes in children with learning differences. Harry thrived with her regular once a week tutoring sessions when Jo-Ann came to our house, which was very convenient for Harry. Harry did about three and a half years of tutoring with Jo-Ann from grade 7 – grade 10 . He found it very helpful, and in addition to teaching him his school subjects – particularly maths, and English, Jo-Ann taught him about organizational and executive skills.

They remain friends and communicate through e-mail. It has proved to be a very beneficial experience for Harry, and thus I would have no hesitation in highly recommending Jo-Ann as a tutor.

I may be contacted at the email address below for further discussion if needed.

 To whom it may concern,

Ms. Jo-Ann Melman was my son, Duncan's (Gr. 2) resource teacher for the 2022/2023 school year.

D truly blossomed as a student under Ms. Melman's care. Ms. Melman managed to relate to D and understands his personal and particular needs and remained flexible around them.

D's confidence has grown in every area of his school life, academic and social. And I would like to emphasize that Ms. Melman was very much an influence on his thriving.

Ms. Melman has helped to give D the gift of seeing himself as a reader and he has managed to finish the year at Grade 2 level. She also helped him to see himself as deserving academic space amongst his classmates.

D loved school last year and I'm confident that it is due to every member of the fantastic team of educators at worked with him at the elementary school during 2022/2023.

Yours faithfully,

Jeanine Macdonald

Hi Jo-Ann,

I just found out that you won't be returning to our school. I'm sorry to hear that. K missed you - she has really enjoyed all the work you've done together.

I just wanted to say thank you for all you've done for the kids with special needs.

Parents like me really appreciate your efforts and how much care and attention  you pour into our children's lives. You have been a wealth of resources as a resource teacher. You make an effort to understand them, speak to their unique interests, and give them space to be themselves and learn in the ways that they learn best.

You have been a champion of inclusivity and a major advocate for our kids in a system that is often frustrating for kids and parents. Especially for kids who are the weirdly shaped pegs that refuse to fit into the round holes that the Ministry thinks they should. As you know, my daughter has sensory needs and gets overwhelmed by constantly participating  in group classroom settings. The emphasis on participation and integration often creates masking at the expense of special needs kids' mental health. True inclusivity recognizes and celebrates different needs and abilities, which is much more beneficial to a child's holistic development. You have been amazing at that.

You've encouraged K to pursue her dreams and goals - she is proud of her artwork, her singing has given her a role in the group so she can attend assemblies, and has things she can work on where she can feel good about herself and her accomplishments. Contrast that to the main classroom where she struggles to 'be like everybody else' and calls herself dumb or stupid when she can't follow along. You have been an amazing support of K and I will always be grateful for everything you have done for us.

Thank you for all your hard work and for everything you've done for my daughter and our family.

We are so sade to see you go.

I hope you're doing well, and you have a restful holiday season.

I don't know what's next for you, but I know that there are kids out there who need your unique teaching style, and I'm sure wherever you are, you will find a way to fill up the children around you with love and help them grow into well-rounded adults with a strong sense of self-worth. For that's the power of a great teacher.

Love and blessings,

Care and K
